Laura Mulvey
Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist. She was educated at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She is currently professor of film and media studies at Birkbeck, University of London. She worked at the British Film Institute for many years before taking up her current position.
She didn't directly write about music videos instead she wrote about representation. She argues for women the result of media being presented from the perspective of men and through the male gaze.
She also believes we live in a male dominated country and women are shown in the way that men want them.
R&B and RAP are the specific genres where you will mainly see this representation and with female artists such as Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus. However , in male music videos such as Chris Brown , Dj Khaled , Tyga and Kid ink women are shown in the way Laura Mulvey explains.
Example Of Music Videos
Dj Khaled - Hold you down .
This music video is a good example of how men look at women for example Dj Khaled talks to his girl in it as his 'bitch' , he shows that by giving her money she will have to do what he says. also in the video the way women are dressed in bikinis in a swimming pool with the men looking at them
Kid Ink - Show Me
In this music video it shows how girls act at a party and that they are mainly there for male attention. Chris brown looks a women up and down making us a an audience look at her up and down and think we have to look like that for men to realise us.
