Video 1
My story- Krept and Konan
Costume: the clothing was quite dark which matched the lighting and the setting at the beginning. They wore tracksuits throughout most of the video, however changed to more casual outfits towards the end. This matched the lyrics as they rapped about their success.
Setting/location: They were in the streets which matched the song, and it was night time which also matched the song. They also filmed in a house which was relevant to the lyrics.
Props: They wore snapbacks which were part of their casual outfits. They also used phones, which is very relevant to the genre which is grime. They also were shown with drinks.
Video 2
Right here- Jess Glynne
Costume: the outfits in this video were very colourful and bright which matched the song and the genre. They were also quite urban outfits which was relevant to the genre. There was also a contrast where the outfits switched to black and white which matched the effects that the video had.
Setting/location: A lot of the video was filmed in front of a black brick wall, which was still relevant to the song. There was also another location where she was in the back of a car going down the street. The end of the video showed her performing on stage.
Props: The main prop was the car, where she was on the back of it. Also she was shown with friends using trolleys and having fun, which matched the pace and tone of the music.
Video 3
Rather be- clean bandit ft jess Glynne
Costume: the outfits were quite simple and casual, which was relevant as it showed the young girl carrying out her normal daily routines. The outfits were also quite cute which matched her personality.
Setting/location: The location was tokyo, the fish market which she passed as part of her normal day to day routine. She was also shown at her house getting out of bed. There was also a stage where the young girl was watching it from the crowd.
Props: The main props were the scooters which they were on. Also there were instruments, one of them being a violin.

Laura Mulvey's Theory
Laura Mulvey's perspective is not so much a theory, but an opinion. Mulvey claims women are misrepresented within the media, where their identities are cut off and all that shows are intended for sexual appeal. She claims women, generally speaking, are ‘dismembered’ within all forms of the media, stripping them from their identity, only to be seen as ‘items’.
Examples I found that heavily prove this theory to be corrected are Holiday - Dizzee Rascal & Ratchet - Borgore.
The Dizzee Rascal track, in question, shows much more identity to the men in the music video, wearing more clothes than the women, who are sexualised.
The track by Borgore (explicit warning, just in case) definitely proves Mulvey's theory to be correct. The women in the music video rarely have their faces shown, but more attention is posed around their bodies.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory
Andrew Goodwin's theory is that: Pop videos, generally speaking, approach narrative from a different angle in comparison to novels and films. They are built around songs, which may not have a traditional narrative structure. The video uses the singer both as narrator and as a character, whilst breaking the 4th wall by looking directly to the camera, in order to engage with the audience/viewer. Some videos, however, may be a direct representation of the song. Others may be seen as ‘eye candy’ for the viewer, or may be linked to/promoting other commodities, i.e film. The three types of relations between songs and videos are: illustration, amplification and disjuncture.
Illustration – Video tells story of the lyric.
Example – Dillon Francis – When We Were Young
Amplification – Video introduces new meanings that do not contradict with lyrics, but add layers of meaning.
Example – Major Lazer – Powerful
Disjuncture – Little connection between lyrics & video, or where video contradicts lyric Example – Diplo – Set Me Free

What Is The Function Of A Music Video?
A music video is a promotional tool used in order to promote and market the artist. Music videos do not make any profit, but can be very expensive to make. The music video allows the artist to create 'eye candy' for their audience, whilst enjoying their music. An example of a very good, yet expensive music video would be Thriller - Michael Jackson.
I feel this music video is a very great one, simply for how it promotes the artist. Michael Jackson, in this instance, is not only the artist, but the participant too. Within his own music video, he's playing a lead role, which would keep the audience focused solely on him. Also, I feel the music video, for its price and the level of technology available at the time, is still able to be called a classic.

4 | Summary of Andrew Goodwin's Theory
Andrew Goodwin's theory
Main points
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc).

Lip Sync Edit
Lipsync Tutorial - Beau
This was my lip sync tutorial where it was the first time I used it , at first I found it difficult but once I got into it and done more examples it started to make sense to me and I understood how it works , meaning I will be able to use it when making the real music video
3 | Function of a music video
What is the function of a music video?
A music video is a short film integrating a song and imagery produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote and sell music.
One of the functions of a music video is to promote the artist and give the audience a visual representation of the artist. This can be done by the use of mise en scene such as costume, setting and props. The costume worn by the artist can be his defining factor that audiences recognise him by. For example as seen above, the Weeknd's defining factor is his crazy hair which is unique and makes him easily recognisable. It can be easily said that this music video was made to promote him as he remains the main focus throughout. We see him walking down a road after a car crash where he remains centralised withing the frame all the time, leaving the audience nothing else to look at other than him. Music videos are a form of entertainment, so its important to entertain the viewers highlighting the artist is a bonus, this can be done by dancing, acting, using animation or comedy.

Summer Work
For my summer work, I decided to create a storyboard based on the music video for Lean On by Major Lazer, MO & DJ Snake. I felt this would be an interesting music video to create a storyboard on, and realised there aren't huge variations in terms of camera shots, edits, etc, but the video itself remains stylistic.
When doing the screenshots, I realised the music video didn't necessarily have an incredibly wide range of different shots & locations, but used what it had to great effect.
I also found that the music video, itself, within the first minute cut a lot between similar shots that would've been taken one after the other. For example, it may be a mid shot > close up > long shot, but two of the shots are at the exact same location, if not, similar.

1. Introduction and Weebly
Hi my name is Chyna Dempster and I am an A2 media student. I enjoyed media in the AS year, and it was probably my favourite subject. I worked well year along with my group and managed to get a grade C. I hope that this year will be even better and I will achieve a higher grade.
Before the end of the AS year, we had to create a weebly website for a music artist. This was to help prepare us for the A2 year. I enjoyed this very much and chose to do a website based around the artist J Cole.
