Digipak Ancillary

For my digipak project, I created a mock up album cover of what Arcane's album would look like. I used synergy by adding the eye effect over the original eye, and resizing the image to make the eye more noticeable.

Ancillary Draft

This is my first draft of an idea of our CD cover. I kept the same text for the front and the back but changed the colour. The eye feature is to symbolise our artist , meaning when you see this image you straight away think of our artist which is Arcane.

19 | Artist Website

Disclosure Website

Disclosure's main website uses a simple but effective black and white colour-scheme. The white against the black background is effective to present to us different links that take us further into the website. These are: Blog, Music, Photo, Live, Store and Video. This offers fans a lot to do on the website such a go through pictures, purchase merchandise or watch their latest videos which are all listed in the video section as seen below. Also, they effectively promote their brand image through the website as the face outline art is used frequently, which is well know by their fans. The face appears on album covers and in music videos which creates synergy across all platforms. It can also be seen that in the top right they also have social media links. These include Twitter, Facebook and Spotify. This offers fans multiple platforms in order to interact with the artists.

Feedback from the Pitch

We were given feedback our pitch from everyone from each group which commented on how well our pitch went, what could be improved and if they had any questions.

Cameo of Arcane

We feel the cameo for our artist, Arcane, needs to be very well done. We want to ensure to our audience that Arcane is still a huge part of the final product, as everything is based around him. However, for the video, we want to make the cameo he makes, a very special thing.

One thing we were still debating over was how the cameo was done. Whether it be him reading a newspaper, buying something at a shop, etc. We wanted to still make it a special thing for the audience to see.

Someone that we feel has done several cameos in their own products is Stan Lee. Although not a music producer, we admire how Stan Lee has been able to still appear in his own work, as such regular characters. Had there been more music videos, Arcane would be seen to do the exact same thing of 'secretly' appearing in his own music videos.

Below are examples of Stan Lee's cameos.

Having said that, we will make the cameo scene for Arcane dependent on the shot/location where Daniel David is singing. We feel this would be best, rather than forcing the cameo to happen before the shots are done themselves.

Pitch 9 - Draft Ancillary (Seun)

For our design idea, we wanted to follow a similar structure to the original use of synergy. The scribble is heavily effective, and is used in music videos, as well as album covers. Below are a few examples:

T
herefore, to follow the effect trend, we attempted a simple idea of using a scribble over our main picture.

We wanted to be sure that it was possible in order to make the artwork actually work, which we feel will work.

Pitch - 16 (Beau) Production Schedule

Pitch 14 / 15 - Storyboard / Animatic (Seun)

We used Storyboard That in order to create our storyboard / animatic. Storyboard That didn't allow us to completely present our ideas, but only to get a rough idea of what we intend to do. Also, there will be several edits of the 'scribble face' throughout the video, along with slow motion shots all across.
The video starts with focus on the main vocalist, then jump cuts to an upset girl in her room.

It continues following the vocalist on a particuar journey, whilst still reverting back to the girl being upset.

A wider range of camera shots are revealed, then cutting to a closeup with an empty background, focusing on the singer, then reverting back to the journey. In the journey, the vocalist bumps into Arcane but is seen as a stranger, making him seem hidden within the video.

The video carries on with the vocalist's journey, continuing the scribble face on things such as walls, poles, faces, etc. It cuts back to the girl in a house, being upset, whilst going to the door. She then sees the vocalist by the door, opening it just before he opens it.

The final shot will be a close up of the girl crying, followed by a flash of the scribble face, which has been continued throughout the video by this point.

Pitch - Synergy (Daniel)

SYNERGY

Our main key visual element we will be using is the Disclosure face art work that they use across all platforms, it is seen in their videos and album covers. Disclosure have a Facebook app which allows fans to edit their own pictures by adding the white face over theirs. I think this is a smart marketing and branding technique as it immerses the fans and allows them to feel a part of a fan base.

As can be seen in the video above, Disclosure us the white face in very quick split second flashes appearing on the faces of the artists. As it is used by them a lot, audiences are able to recognise the artist without any additional information. That is why we feel that Arcane himself does not have to present throughout the video as this simple art feature can do the branding. This is also used by Daft Punk as their identity is always hidden due to them wearing helmets. Despite nobody knowing how they look, they a branded by the use of the helmets that are recognisable by most music fans.

We have carried out test shots in order to see if we can incorporate the white face into our music video. Despite Sam Smith being the main focus of the music video itself, the video will still be entirely made to brand Disclosure or in this case Arcane. Flashes of the white face will appear throughout not only on Sam Smith but on random settings and places. This will result in constant branding throughout the video as the white face is a distinct well known feature of Disclosure.

Pitch - 12 | Post-Production

For our post production, we will have at least 3 base tracks. In these base tracks, however, there will be a variation of shot angles and framing. For example:

The three shots above show two of the base tracks used in the original music video. We intend on following a similar trend by having a very focused close up and mid shot. The base tracks, themselves, will be of the performer performing, but in different angles. We will be maintaining discontinuous editing all throughout the music video, in order to keep the stylistic effect prominent. Also, slow motion will be a key factor in our music video, as it will sustain from the beginning to end of the video.

Pitch- 18 Social Media (chyna)

We created a group twitter and Instagram page and this is where we will be letting our audience know on our progression with our music video and any other updates with anything else including our digipak. We can use these social media platforms to connect with our audience and engage with them, as we will need to promote our music video and our artist as much as possible.

Our Twitter name is: media_group3

Our Instagram name is: media_group3
We are going to use our Instsagram to post pictures of our filming and progression along the journey. We've already posted pictures of us filming our prelim which allows our audience to see how we've progressed from the beginning to the end. This will also give us an opportunity to promote our music video and our artist.

Brand Image - Pitch (Daniel)

DISCLOSURE

Disclosure are an English electronic music duo, consisting of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence. The siblings grew up in ReigateSurrey. Their debut album, Settle, released on 3 June 2013 through PMR, was nominated for Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 2014 Grammy AwardsFollowing the worldwide success of their album Settle and a worldwide tour, the duo began working on their second album Caracal, featuring vocals from Sam SmithGregory PorterThe WeekndLorde and others. The music videos for official singles from the album published on YouTube are interconnected and follow a story line, each newly released video furthering the plot. The videos follow a young woman in a sci-fi, dystopian world who is, for some unknown reason, being chased by the police.

SEUN aka ARCANE - Artist being branded

We have taken Disclosure's marketing strategy and incorporated their white face outline to our artist which is Seun. We decided to get rid of it being two brothers and as a result  put all of the branding focus on one person. We have chosen the name Arcane for our artist as by definition it is being mysterious or secret. This links to Arcane not being the main focus of the video, but rather being mostly branded by the art.

Another example of a distinct artist feature can be the priest clothing of Tchami. It is present in every one of his videos and his marketing art work as seen on the right which is similar to ours as it uses the face outline.

Costume - Most artists of the electronic genre use very casual clothing and is rarely very branded and distinct as with Tchami and Daft Punk. This can connect with a wider audience due to its simplicity and availability to everyone. This may be good as building an expensive and lavish brand image may push away audiences of a lower disposable income.

Pitch- 4 (Beau)

Audience 2

target audience is the intended audience or readership of a publication, advertisement, or other message. In marketing and advertising, it is a specific group of people within the target market at which a product or the marketing message of a product is aimed.

Our core audience will be mainly young males who start from the age of 14+ , boys who are typically interested in music production just like Disclosure and who like to make their own music. They would be middle class and like the electric genre. Our music video will appeal to them as we will include clothing that you generally see the core audience wearing such as jeans , shirt or casual top and a bomber jacket. Also make sure we reach target of making it a electric genre so they will be able to understand and enjoy the video. Usually in Disclosure music videos their are bright light and to make our video appeal to the core audience we are going to have bright lighting in the background because that is what the core audience will expect. The core audience could also be two brothers who want to follow in the footsteps of disclosure.

This is a picture of a similar core audience who will fit our criteria

This is an example of the clothing the core audience generally wear and go out and buy.

Our wider audience will be a bit older such as 30+ but also middle class and could also include girls as girls could like their music but not be the main target audience. For example , girl may not wanna dress like disclosure , however they like the music they make and listen to it but wont go out their way to listen to it.  Our video may not appeal to the wider audience but will like the song choice.

Pitch- 6 Setting and Location (Chyna)

Setting and Location.
We will be filming in several different locations.
Our first location is Piccadilly circus, but we are specifically using the area where the screens are as we want to incorporate this as our lighting. We feel this will look very urban and be effective, which ties in with our song and the way our video will be edited. We are going to film some of the scenes at night which will really emphasis the lights of Piccadilly Circus and the atmosphere that is among everyone on the streets.
These are some of the photos that we took of Oxford Street which just shows the street and how the lights look at night time/evening time. Another one of our locations is Canary Wharf. We want to use this location, as again at night we would like to incorporate the lights of all of the different buildings which we think is a good place to do this.

Pitch - 5 (Beau)

Audience 2:

Our genre is electronic/pop , big fans of this genre usually expect to see bright lighting the camera mainly focusing on the artist performing and it be very stylistic. With a electric fan base they are quite different as they expect to see more of a narrative than a performance , and you are generally more drawn towards the beat. With a pop music the location is usually filmed in a studio with the artist performing to the song with surroundings of bright lights. Artists that are a good example of this are Ariana Grande and Jessie J.
You tend to get close ups and mid shots of the artist basically performing to the camera.

From these screen shots you can that the location is in the studio and both of the artists look directly look at the camera.

Electronic artists such as Calvin Harris and Clean Banditt music videos are all more narrative where you hardly see the artist in the video.

From these screen shots you can see that the main focus is to get the location in and to tell the narrative as the person who usually performs in the music video is not the proper artist. For example, in the screen shots above you don't see Calvin Harris or Clean Banditt.

This is Calvin Harris YouGov profile as he is someone who we think is similar to Disclosure.

After getting all this information as a group we have used our imagination and come to an agreement that the electronic music genre are more casual they don't go out their way to get exotic clothing its just normal clothes they you may just find in your wardrobe. We get a picture that people who are interested in this genre they like to sit in their room and make music and do production at home in their own time as a hobby. They do subjects in school such as music, and like to play an instrument.

Pitch - 3| Initial Idea (Seun)

The initial idea for our music video came from seeing the original music video, then listening to the song and drawing ideas from there.

'

The theme of night life was one I thought worked really well in the video, and was what I would've imagined it to be before seeing the video. We also felt the use of slow motion would be necessary, as it really works in the video, therefore, we intend on having this feature in our final product.

Another edit effect we will be including is a stylistic effect. I had originally seen this sort of effect take place in the Don't Blame It On The Boogie music video by the Jackson 5.

The effect, in question is the one below. The duplicated layer with added colour, I think would work really well in our video, but in a different format. We feel that this effect would be very stylistic, especially in the form that we'll be using it.

A video that shows the use of location/focus, which is similar to what we'll be doing is Trouble On Oxford Street by Skinny Lister. This video uses the focus effect very well, to blur the bright lights and focus on the artist, which is an effect we intend to use.

Our video will follow Goodwin's theory on music video, by consisting of narrative and performance aspects, which will cater to both genres, being electronic and pop.

Pitch - 17 (Beau)

Risk Assessment

When filming our music video we will have to be aware of any possible danger or any problems that we could face and if we do we will need to know what we can do to minimise the dangers and problems.

Possible Dangers or Problems:

First problem would be our safety as we are filming on a busy London road so we will have to watch out that we dont get run over and hit by a car.

One problem that we could face is if we are not allowed to film in a certain location where we have decided will be good for our video. To minimise this problem we will have to make sure that we get permission to film there so we know we can film there and if not we will know we will have to choose somewhere else.

Another problem could be the weather , for example if it is raining on the day we decide to film it will be a real problem as it could ruin the expensive equipment such as the camera , the lights and any other equipment that we pick to take out. To prevent this from happening we will haver to check the weather forecast and make sure we take cover up like umbrellas to protect the equipment.

One possible danger that we could face is possible incidents that could happen if anyone wants the steal the equipment as they are very expensive cameras. To help make this not happen we will have to make sure we keep the equipment close to us at all times and that we are not filming late a night and to not keep the cameras on show when we are not using it.

There are no major scenes at shots that we have thought about to be in our music video that could cause us to be in any danger , we have sat and thought about it together as a group
